The Accra Ridge Church begun as a small group of British residents gathered together on Sunday, to worship in English and in their own fashion. Sometimes, there was no Minister present. So they would sing and pray as one of them led the service. The church which was located in Ridge was conceived to satisfy the needs of a number of residents for community worship. Services were held in a wooden building rented from the government which served both as a church and a manse for the Chaplain who was later appointed in 1936. The name Ridge Church was adopted just before the church’s dedication in 1946, otherwise it was known as the European church at its inception.

As the congregation increased in size, it stirred up the idea of building a church. The building started in 1945 and was dedicated in 1946 by Bishop Aglionby, the then Bishop of Accra. Although the church started as an Anglican congregation, services were conducted by Methodist and Presbyterian Ministers from time to time. By the time the church moved to what became known as the old church building, it had assumed an interdenominational character. This was later finalized through the appointment of Methodist and Presbyterian Chaplains and the adoption of an interdenominational constitution. Thus Accra Ridge church became the first ecumenical church.

At some point in time the old church building was considered a national monument by the Museum and National Monuments Board.  However, in March 2003, the Board withdrew that status. In the meantime, the foundation of the old church building had weakened with the passage of time. Several efforts were made by some members of the church to preserve the building by suggesting a technology to reinforce the foundation. However, at an SGM held in October 2005, the decision was taken to demolish the old church in preference for a church hall, whose multi-faceted usage would be a source of revenue to the church. The old church building has since been demolished.

The church has since grown in leaps and bounds and has two satellite churches located in Tudu and Manet off the Spintex Road. The Tudu Outreach Mission as it is known is located at the PWD Yard. It was conceived through the evangelistic activities of the Evangelism Committee at Tudu while the Manet Chapel was donated to the Ridge church by Manet Housing Limited.

The church has fully-fledged Sunday school departments, active and vibrant youth services, church groups and organizations to addresses various and specific needs of church members and a fleet of activities and programmes to ensure the proper spiritual nourishment and the development of all members across board. The Clergy’s tenure has since been changed from part time to full time for a period of 5 years and the role of the Resident Chaplain also been changed to Coordinating Minister.

In 2006, the church celebrated its 70th anniversary in grand style 2006 guided by the theme, “Moving forward in the strength of the Lord.” The church envisages continuing in its bid to make giant strides in its primary mission of discipleship.
